Echo is an awesome little exploration game with beautiful graphics and storytelling.

Without spoiling the story (too much), you play as a bat named Echo.

You have to reunite with your color of other bats since you’re lost in a huge cave due to a collapse. Since you’re a bat, you get a sonar ability that lets you navigate through a few different environments. Each area has dangers and obstacles that block your way, so you need to proceed with caution.

The game isn’t difficult and it simply tells a story with amazing visuals. They’re like a 2D abstract form of presentation. The game plays like a sidescroller, but it tells a story at the same time.

The Free Ones is a platformer game with a twist.

You play in first-person only and you use physics to your advantage. In other words, it’s like first-person parkour.

You’re armed with a grapple gun you use sort of like a hookshot from the Zelda series. You use it to grab onto objects and pull yourself to them, or you can use it to grab other objects.

Of course, being a physics-based indie platformer, you can’t expect the physics to be perfect. They’re going to be clunky and awkward, which is what makes these games so awesome. If they were perfect, it’d be boring.

This game is all about physics. You need to escape the island, but to do that, you’ll have to overcome all the puzzles and find all the secrets to get out. Your grappling hookshot is your main way of transporting yourself around the island. You can attach yourself to wood and other objects. You can even jump from object to object a la Spiderman, but you’ll have to recharge it and land eventually.

The goal of The Free Ones is to escape from the island you’re on. You need to solve puzzles and jump platforms to escape. The creators of this game also helped make FarSky. You may know them as Farsky interactive. They also made Sky Break. The game is pretty much recently announced so there’s not much information about it online. You can expect an awesome physics-based platformer as info starts to surface about The Free Ones.

Yo! Noid Was Ahead of its Time is an indie adventure platformer game.

You play as the Noid venturing The Void. (Really?)

It’s a fan-made sequel that continues the story of the Noid back on the PlayStation. The game plays like Banjo Kazooie in a 3D environment as you traverse colorful landscapes. The game also throws puzzles at you for you to solve. They’re easy, but the camera could use some work. It actually makes the puzzles a lot more difficult than they are because you can’t see far enough or wide enough.

But it’s not that bad.

The objective is to find your lost yo-yo. When you recover it, you can use it. But here’s where the camera gets kind of stuttery and makes the game difficult to play. I’m not sure if it was intentional, but it does take getting used to.

The game offers a pretty fun and challenging puzzle adventure with plenty of 3D platforming. For an indie platformer, it’s a blast.

The levels are difficult and you’ll need to try and try again. But that’s what happens with these older retro platformers.

Like they say, it’s “NES hard.” Those were the good ol’ days.

The graphics aren’t that impressive, but they’re true 3D and not 2.5D. The sound is also not bad and does the job. There’s also music and some smooth animations. The soundtrack is pretty awesome.

You could definitely see this game on a PlayStation or N64. It’ll remind you of classics like Mario 64.

Grab a slice of pizza and sit down.

Strike Vector EX is an aerial combat shooter that requires quick reflexes and twitch reactions.

You’re a pilot of a transforming mechanical airplane. The game was originally released by Ragequit Corporation back in 2014, but this version has a lot of improvements over the original. For one, there’s a new control scheme. According to reviewers, it’s been much improved over the Strike Vector. Another thing is new gameplay modes.  There’s a single-player storyline that you can complete, and new features to go with it.

The best improvement is the graphics by far. Now, Strike Vector EX comes back with an all-new Unreal Engine 4 remake. Everything looks silky smooth and realistic. This is probably the only reason why I’d give this game a try- because it looks amazing. I’ve never played the original but this version has me drooling over the scenery.

As for the gameplay, it’s a very fast-paced combat game. You need to be able to dodge enemy fire and switch between different abilities, like strafing or activating your boosters. You need to be able to act fast because the game gets super busy at times. There are a ton of enemies on screen to shoot, enemy fire to dodge, and obstacles to avoid.

But it’s very easy to get used to the controls. That’s the easy part. The hard part is mastering the combat and acting fast enough in a plan of attack. You need to know your priorities when there are a ton of things going on. That’s what makes Strike Vector EX a blast to play.

And of course, there’s the multiplayer. You’ll have to see how crazy this is for yourself.

The Universim is a game where you play as a god and control a civilization of Nuggets (yes, Nuggets).

If you’ve played Spore, it’s similar but rather focuses on mankind and a different control scheme.

You don’t control them directly, but rather, you tell them what to do. This varies like research and technology. You tell them what you research and they’ll follow suit, and thus, your civilization will evolve according to your decisions. You can pick what advancements to research, what buildings to construct, what type of tech you want to evolve, and all this will contribute to the outcome of your Nugget society.

You start at a primitive level- they’re just a bunch of cavemen and need to invent fire. You work your way up to spaceships and planetary travel, just like Spore. You evolve from the stone age all the way up to the space age and beyond. There are many games like this, and this isn’t particularly where The Universim is unique. It has its own tidbits that make it stand out which you’ll need to see for yourself (spoilers).

Besides evolving, you need to defend your Nuggets from attacks by animals, viruses, wars (between each city), disasters, and even meteor attacks. It’s all in your hands if you want to keep peace and evolve your society, or if you want them to war on each other and fight.

The game is pretty awesome even in early access alpha. The demo for just rolled out and you can play a bit of the simulator. Not everything is unlocked, but you can get a good taste if this game is your thing. You can build basic structures, get a feel for the controls, and the different types of research and tech you can have your Nuggets perform. The game is relaxed and easy to play. You create decisions on a big scale rather than micromanaging each Nugget. They can think for themselves. Your job is to evolve and create a perfect world for them…or not. The choice is yours.

I’ll Kill the Last Alien is a top-down bullet arcade shooter.

But, there’s a huge twist that makes it unique from other similar games.

You can’t get killed.

You’re sent to a planet with a mission to kill every single alien you come into contact with. As soon as you get there, you see the boss. You kill him. Then you get sent back to the past. The game restarts.

You’re then back with a time-shifting ability to slow down time. You can’t kill any aliens. Every time you do, you’re sent back in time only to repeat the game.

Isn’t that weird? Isn’t that unique?

The aliens aren’t affected by this restarting level thing, as they’re ready to eat you up. They have projectile weapons which they’ll gladly use against you. You can take up to 5 hits, to which then, you’ll go crazy and kill every alien you see. But then that’ll set you back, of course.

You can’t shoot, touch, or even jump on aliens. You need to dodge them all. Dodging, rolling, and avoiding are the keys to beat I’ll Kill the Last Alien. You need to be able to use your time-shift abilities and have quick reflexes to beat the game.

The game has nice artwork with a happy soundtrack. The game gets pretty chaotic at parts so you’ll need to be quick. You’ll want to kill them, but you can’t.

Night and Fire is a horror puzzle game where you need to get a contraption up and running in a dangerous forest.

It’s an atmospheric horror game where you play as a girl who needs to solve puzzles to activate a very strange machine. You wake up in the forest next to a campfire with no idea why you’re there (just like pretty much any other horror game). You need to solve the puzzle of the machine that sits next to you.

As you venture through the forest, you’ll find that it’s lurking with monsters everywhere. You’ll quickly learn that there are three separate and distinct baddies that each require their own tactic to defeat. They each have their own weakness and requires a plan of attack…vainly similar to Five Nights at Freddy’s. You need to find out how to take care of the monsters and figure out how to fix the machine.

It’s pretty frustrating because the puzzles in Night and Fire are difficult.

When you get attacked, the game jumps to a close-up kinda like Slenderman games. You’ll probably get scared at first, but then you’ll get used to them. What makes this game awesome is the atmosphere and puzzles. You need to figure out what to do while being in a very careful state. It’s a very interesting experience and will keep you glued to the screen until you figure out the whole thing.

Night and Fire is currently in alpha, but the game looks very good and plays pretty well. There are some narrative and some basic multitasking. But the trial-and-error puzzles are what keep this game unique. They’re difficult.
