Game Description

Espial: The Eye from Above is a game where you play as an undercover spy and your mission is to take pictures using a camera of a secret briefcase exchange between two other people of interest.

That’s the game in a nutshell. It’s a pretty interesting concept and I haven’t really seen any other game focus on such a situation like this. You need to capture images using your camera of the exchange, and then afterward as well. This means you’ll be following the transaction for the entirety of the game. You must always have your eyes on the briefcase at all times, or else the game’s over. And you need to do it while being hidden from view.

That’s the goal of the game. Keep your eyes on the briefcase. It sounds easy but it can get pretty difficult at parts as you need to remain discreet.

It’s an espionage stealth game that kinda plays similar to Metal Gear Solid 2. It could even be a mission in the Metal Gear series if it were reskinned to fit the Snake’s universe. That’s how similar they are.

One thing worth mentioning is that the targets you need to keep a visual on can easily blend in with the other people. You play in a train station, so there are a lot of civilians walking about. Keep your eye on the prize (the briefcase) or you’ll easily lose it. It can take you several tries to get the hang of how the game works. It takes place during the Cold War and you only have a single roll of film. You need to take quality photos so be sparse.

The game has a unique gameplay style with graphics that are reminiscent of paper art. It’s almost like Spy vs. Spy. There’s also some background music and environmental ambiance sound effects that you’d hear in the streets. You can hear the everyday conversations of others and the entire world around you blended into one ambient track. It really does give you an atmospheric feel.

The art is pleasing to look at and really stands out.

Given that the graphics aren’t photorealistic, they’re good enough for you to get immersed. Combine that with the sound effects and music and you have a pretty tight game.

Also, you need a pretty beefy rig to play this. The game isn’t completely optimized yet, so you’ll likely suffer from framerate drops here and there. You can still get away on an average computer setup, but don’t expect smooth gameplay. It does get to the point where it affects the game and could cause you to fail the mission, so that’s a definite area for improvement.

Espial: The Eye from Above is available for download using the link below. It’s still in Beta and has been released quite a while ago. It’s still under development and you can try out this indie stealth game for yourself.
