Sure, there are tons of these games and they seem to be falling from the sky as of late, but XERA has an edge over the competition with some unique features that the others don’t have.

It takes place in a huge world for you to explore. It’s completely open-world so you can travel the lands in search of resources in order to survive. The game’s concept isn’t anything new, as many other survival games play similarly.

The game has a short storyline to it. In brief, XERA is the name of corporation that found a loophole in a new law created by the government that prevented the development of any AI. They legally seized all research created by others, but could continue developing in its own facility. When they released the first AI humanoid, society couldn’t accept it.

Thus, war ensued. The government usurped the XERA research facility and reprogrammed the humanoids in order to keep the real human rebellion under control. Instead, a glitch caused these robots to kill humans instead.

So now you’re one of the few scattered remaining humans in this destroyed world. And your only goal is to survive. Sure, it’s a pretty cheesy story, but let’s get what actually matters- the gameplay.

The game at its core is a PvP game. There’s a huge bias towards it so if you’re looking for PvE, look elsewhere. This game is based around combat between players. And that’s not all, there are some environmental threats as well- you need to look out and fight AI bots as well.

You need to find a place to call yours. Find a shelter and make it your home. Guard it and defend it against other players that try to invade it.

The world is littered with lost. You’ll need to find food, water, drinks, first aid kits, medical supplies, and of course, weapons. The whole area you can explore is huge. It’s completely open for you to explore and scavenge for resources. You’ll need to set time out of your routine to look and gather loot because it’s critical to survive.

There’s a full day/night cycle built into the game’s engine. When nighttime rolls around, it’s a good time to look for loot because it’s very difficult to be seen by other players. This is probably the best part of the game. It’s just so fun sneaking around at night and being cautious of your surroundings. You need to tread carefully because there could be other players anywhere. Bring a source of light and a good weapon, because you’ll need them if you get caught.

But then again, it’s hard for you to see others as well. It’s a double-edged sword. Like many other survival games (Ark: Survival Evolved, Rust, and DayZ), it’s a good idea to leave all your loot in your inventory and explore at night with basic equipment. If you get killed, you’ll only lose invaluables.

When you find an enemy player, it’s time to fight. You’ll only be able to use weapons you’ve found in the world. When you kill someone, you take their loot and bring home what you need. XERA features a full loot drop. This means everything drops from player inventory if you get killed or kill an enemy player. This is a somewhat unique feature to the survival genre.

How you play the game is up to you- you can be a hermit in the dark, a sneaky bandit, or even a savior going around helping others. You don’t have to kill everyone you see. Occasionally, you do meet other friendly players who you can work together with. Although this is rare in survival games, XERA does give you the freedom to work cooperatively. However, it’s still a PvP game at its core.

The game is powered by Unreal Engine 4, so you can expect amazing, photorealistic graphics and sound. This is something I’m personally very excited about. A lot of these games have subpar visuals that take you out of the game. So seeing something with detailed graphics is very refreshing. The screenshots and gameplay footage already look very polished.
