Between the Worlds is a hilarious little indie adventure with a witty narrator that dictates the story as you play along.

It’s an adventure game that has you traveling amongst different worlds- each themed to a particular movie genre. You start out in a large room full of different books. You have no idea why you’re here and you have no idea what you’re doing.

The narrator chimes and starts talking to you as you explore the area, filling you in on some details about your history. You’ll notice a little surprise as soon as you pick up the wand. Heh.

You’ll then find a magic wand that allows you to really do some damage. You’ll need this in order to move objects around and manipulate the environment (at first). The narrator continues to talk, kind of condescendingly, as you play around with random objects trying to make some progress.

As you travel between worlds, the narrator will shift in tone and dialog. Most of it is pretty entertaining and fits the game well. You’ll laugh. You’ll get annoyed. You’ll start to wonder how the narrator knew exactly what you’re doing and exactly what you’re thinking. If you want a game that breaks the fourth-wall, Between the Worlds does it well and delivers it to your face.

After this, you can travel between new movie worlds. The majority of the game is just exploring and seeing how far you can take the narrator. You can also pick up upgrades and “boosts” as you progress through the game. They help your character get new abilities like an extended jump so you can access areas you couldn’t get to before.

It’s required in order to get to different platforms in each world. The narrator almost has something to say about everything, and for most of the actions, it syncs up perfectly. There are some parts that make you wonder if it was a mistake or a bug though.

You can jump, move objects, shift objects, and run. The game plays like a Metroidvania game where you need to find your way through the level by getting upgrades and making progress towards your goal. That’s the core of it. Just throw in a narrator.

Between the Worlds is all about having a good time and exploring the movie sets while accompanied by a narrator who kind of depicts the struggle between free will or determinism. If you liked The Stanely Parable, you’ll want to give this game a try. Use the link below to play Between the Worlds!
