Dragon Step is a new platforming adventure game that’ll have you nostalgic for the old-school Spyro games.

It’s a 3D platformer where you play as a charcoal-skinned dragon of miniature proportions (well, for the typical dragon). You go through a huge, realistic world and explore the many nooks and crannies for treasures, gems, and other key items. It’s pretty much Spyro with realistic graphics. And it’s pretty amazing to look at.

The visuals are probably the best part of the game. The worlds are vibrant and bright with color. The grass moves. The water waves. The birds fly. And the wheat sways. It’s like the groundwork for the most realistic dragon platformer ever made- visually. I can’t wait to see this game in full force. The game uses UE4 for modern graphics.

Being a platformer, you’ll do all the platformer things you’d expect. complete quests, meet NPCs, traverse huge worlds, make difficult jumps, and burn enemies to a crisp. As a small dragon, you can dish out some pretty big dragon attacks. You can breathe out fire, spin your scaly tail, and even fly very short distances (it’s more of a glide maneuver to get across platforms).

The game is mainly a platformer tied with a simple storyline. You can explore the world at your own pace and just discover new lands, objects, collectibles, and characters. There are a few NPCs that you can meet and greet that look like they’ll play an important role in the full game, but they’re very basic as of now with simple dialog.

It’s still just an alpha demo at this point, so there’s still a lot to be desired. But from the groundwork and foundation of the game so far, it looks very promising. You can freely explore two of the game’s worlds in the demo. The first area is a small demo area disguised as a playable world (as with pretty much all games nowadays). And the second one is where the fun kicks in- it’s a huge open-field with a giant castle up for grabs! It’s just awesome to look at the amazing detailed environments around your character.

Dragon Step is still very primitive at this point. The game has some performance issues and the interface needs a lot of work. But again, this is just the alpha demo. I expect the full version to look amazing when it’s fully fleshed out with detailed environments, enemies, NPCs, and a cute little storyline to go with it.

It’s like Spyro modernized. If you dig fantasy platformer adventures, Dragon Step is definitely worth keeping your eye on. You can check out the demo of it using the link below. It’ll make you nostalgic for old-school platformers like Mario, Spyro, and Banjo Kazooie (when platformers were good!) back in the N64 era of games. Playable on both Windows and Linux platforms.
