The Empty City is a surreal experience where you play some unknown character in a lone city.

The game’s artwork will instantly remind you of older games in the PS1-era.  You start as a polygonal brown figure on a tall tower overlooking some various structure in the fog. Then you continue with your doings by grabbing a symbolic flower. As you continue your journey through the lone city, you start to wonder what happened to all the citizens that were once here.

You’ll explore sunken buildings, overrun streets, and flooded areas with a giant hill overlooking the city. The game is an adventure game at its core, but it’s pretty cool just to explore.

It’s not a horror game, but it definitely has an eerie feel to it. It’s one of those games where you don’t have any backstory nor narrative to interpret, so it’s really up to you to figure out what the heck happened to this huge city that was once bustling with people. It’s an atmospheric and surreal experience with a nice soundtrack that’ll suck you into the game’s creepy design. If you like artsy and surreal games, try out The Empty City.

Wake Up is a horror game that’ll instantly remind you of the good old days when survival horror wasn’t mainstream.

Remember games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill with their fixed camera angles and tank controls? Wake Up is a recreation of it as you wake up in a low-poly PS1-era dream world. Your only objective is a navigate the world and get through the nightmare. It involves puzzles, monsters, and tons of weird trippy mixed reality scenes.

The game is very short and only takes about 20 minutes to complete. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t deliver the horrifying experience you’d expect from an old-school horror game. The audio and visuals are spot-on and the ambiance will just have you frozen in fear at some parts. The game plays like a dream where you need to travel to various locations with no recollection of why you’re there and what you’re doing. As you progress, the game gets more and more freaky.

Writer’s Block is a surreal point-and-click horror game adventure that’s totally a psychological thriller.

You play as a writer who’s upset that he can’t earn any fame from his works. You’re jealous of your friend who’s career is taking off and your jealousy turns into real nightmares and monsters. You have to use puzzle-solving to escape them and not get caught.

Right now, the game offers a short demo of just jealousy as it manifests itself into a nightmare. The full game will have a full spectrum of emotions and memories you need to use stealth to escape or solve puzzles in order to deal with them. There’s also a narrative that has multiple paths depending on your choices you make. You can fight the emotions or you can get consumed by them- it’s all up to you which will change the ending of the game.

It mixes horror and an immersive atmospheric adventure into one scary experience you don’t want to miss if you’re a fan of psychological horror. Try out Writer’s Block for yourself and see jealousy before your eyes!

Marie’s Room is an exploration indie game about a friendship between two classmates.

The game is a first-person adventure game where you explore the past between Kelsey and Marie. You play as Kelsey and you’re walking around Marie’s room as it was 20 years ago. As you explore the abandoned room, you’ll find that it’s full of memories between them. Some of them are bad, others are good. It’s a tale of two classmates of the past as how Kelsey remembers it.

You can investigate nearly every object in the room and find out the secrets Marie never wanted you to know about. It features some detailed artwork and a beautiful soundtrack. It has voice acting and a very nice story you wouldn’t expect. It’s an incredible game.

The Cinema Rosa is an awesome psychedelic visual narrative in the first-person perspective.

The game has you exploring an old and abandoned art exhibit cinema where you’ll have to solve puzzles and discover your character’s past. You’ll experience many different emotions such as nostalgia and regret as your character uncovers suppressed feelings he once had. The cinema is broken and dilapidated, but it’s the perfect place where you can solve puzzles to help rebuild it back to the former days and discover yourself in the process.

It’s not exactly a horror game, but it definitely has that horror aspect to it. You have to explore the entire building with plenty of nooks and crannies to see. The place is very detailed and realistic. As you restore it, you can see how it once looked.

The narrative of the many owners that once owned the place is good for backstory and is probably the best way to find out what happened to The Cinema Rosa. If you like exploration games, you definitely need to try this game out. It’s hard to explain without spoiling it, so just play it.

You Left Me is a dark and surreal first-person visual novel that deals with some touchy subjects.

It has you playing with a cyclopic cat and a hilarious moon that tells some lame jokes. It plays just like any other visual novel, but one thing you’ll notice about this game is the artwork. It’s STUNNING.

It features a variety of scenes which you’ll appreciate all the detail that went into the hand-drawn artwork. It simply looks gorgeous. It’s like the devs went out and paid a professional artist to draw stills and blend it with some very nice colors and detail and then mashed it into a novel. The game looks like something from the Final Fantasy series. It’s seriously one of the gorgeous visual novels I’ve ever seen. It’s a nice change from the saturated anime-style you see pretty much in every other novel.

Anyway, you play as a character that wakes up in a different world and you only have until nighttime to escape. You need to find out why you’re here and what you need to do. But at the same time, you’ve forgotten something that you need to recover and seek out. Without spoiling the game, you’ll have to find out for yourself. The story mixes humor, dark, and some other touchy subjects like loneliness and even suicide into one emotionally-driven visual novel. It’s a very polished game.

It features 5 different endings depending on the choices you make and you’ll likely play through at least two of them. It’s that good of a game. I wanted to see all endings so I had to constantly make the “wrong” choices in order to see them all. Each playthrough lasts from about 10 to 20 minutes, so you can easily sail through it and witness the dreamlike original artwork.

The story is amazing. It’s inspiriting and beautiful. I’m not saying anymore.

No Time is another escape room game, but this time you have no time!

You literally only have 5 minutes to escape from a dark and somewhat creepy room. You need to do everything you typically do in escape room games like solve puzzles and discover various mysteries about the room. The time is constantly ticking and you’ll feel like you’re constantly pushed to hurry it up!

Although there’s no lore behind it, the game is good enough to keep you busy. It’s rather straightforward and you won’t have much time to read about the environment. There are random notes that you read and various situations you’ll find yourself in, but most of the game is running around trying everything to escape!

If you’re not good at working under pressure, you may want to steer clear of this title. But if you’re in for some fast-paced puzzle solving action, give No Time a try.

The game is in first-person with some nice 3D graphics that give the overall game a nice feeling like you’re seriously trapped in some dark mansion or something. There are also quite a few bugs like items being able to get reached through physical barriers. Some puzzles also make no sense and aren’t quite intuitive, so you’ll be clicking around wondering what to do.

However, the concept of No Time is pretty unique. I’ll give it that. You don’t see many puzzle games with a timer.

RoomScape is a puzzle adventure game with a very interesting game design.

You play as a girl who wakes up in a strange research lab without any memory of what happened (pretty much the prologue of every videogame ever). You need to explore the facility and try to escape from it! You can roam around the place but you’ll quickly learn that there’s another being behind the announcement system that tells you if you want to escape, you need to complete the task of solving puzzles. By doing this, you’ll get to escape and get your memories restored.

RoomScape takes place in a futuristic world with some nice graphics that look surreal. It takes place in the first-person perspective and provides a variety of engaging puzzles to solve. You’ll learn about the protagonist you play as and you’ll collect new items that help you discover her past. The items you get will need to be combined in order to get past puzzles.

It’s kind of a narrative mixed with puzzle elements with ingenious design. The place has four compartments each with their own unique “theme” that you need to get through. The puzzles range from easy to complex and you’ll need to use extreme attention to detail and think unconventionally in order to solve them. If you like puzzle games, this is your game.

Living Nightmares is a freakin’ freaky indie horror game that takes everything you know about dolls and cults and put them into one game.

It’s everything you know about horror games on steroids. It combines atmospheric, surreal horror that gives you that spooky feeling like something’s gonna jump out at you. You know, that super tense feeling you get when walking down a dark hallway in a dimly-lit giant mansion.

And then you also get the actual jumpscares as well.

Yup, you get both in one.

Typically, you either get one or the other, but Living Nightmares delivers on both ends. The game has you playing as a character named John Doe (how original), which is a guy who can’t remember anything and wakes up in a dark mansion (how also original). He quickly notices that there are strangely dressed cult members wearing black cloaks and all he wants to do is escape.

The game has a whole cast of characters from Legio (a cast member that speaks to you from the cult) to The Burning Man (which is a violent person that’s unpredictable) to the Girl Next Door (who portrays a normal citizen but can’t help you at all) to the Mansion itself (which is a character and is self-aware) to Samura (a pretty girl who seems to be kind) to the Doll (which you’ll see for yourself!).

But, as with any horror game, it’s not that easy!

The objective of the game is to explore the mansion and collect seven coins throughout seven different “nightmares.” In other words, John has exactly one week to escape the mansion or else who knows what’ll happen to him. Each nightmare is like different episodes that you play through and the end result is a special coin that’s required for your ticket to freedom.

It’s similar to The Twilight Zone, where each night has you playing through a dream and each one is unique with different artwork and visual effects. The gameplay mechanics also change throughout the different dreams, so it’s like playing seven horror games in one. However, the dreams are connected to each other and influence each other in their own way. You’ll have to play it to understand to avoid any spoilers.

In the demo build, you start out in a monochrome dream (with plenty of nightmare fuel to go around). You’ll get exposed to the combat system and also encounter some of the monsters- and there’s one especially creepy monster that’ll burn an image into your eyes. It’s a two-faced doll.

The game features surreal and detailed graphics that easily suck you right into the gameplay. The artwork is dark, dull, and damp all at the same time and gives you that immersion where you can’t look away from the screen because you’re so attuned to what may be lurking around the corner. You’ll be glued to the screen, but at the same time, you’ll wish you never started playing it.

Personally, I hate this kind of horror because it’s the type that always gets me. If it didn’t have jumpscares, I wouldn’t have as much of a problem. But knowing that jumpscares are everywhere and the fact that you have an HP bar means it’s not just one of those indie exploration games. It means you’ll have to fight the monsters or get killed (which means you need to look at the screen)!

The combat system in Living Nightmares is done via first-person. It’s an FPS system where you get to use different weapons in order to take down or chase away monsters. The game has superb audio that matches with the level design and plenty of jumpscares to go around. There’s also extremely tension in some areas that you just know something’s gonna jump at you.

From the demo so far, Living Nightmares is a very well-done indie horror title that just delivers scare after scares and offers something fresh to table. If you like horror games, give this one a go. You’ll get scared. I guarantee it.

The Free Ones is a platformer game with a twist.

You play in first-person only and you use physics to your advantage. In other words, it’s like first-person parkour.

You’re armed with a grapple gun you use sort of like a hookshot from the Zelda series. You use it to grab onto objects and pull yourself to them, or you can use it to grab other objects.

Of course, being a physics-based indie platformer, you can’t expect the physics to be perfect. They’re going to be clunky and awkward, which is what makes these games so awesome. If they were perfect, it’d be boring.

This game is all about physics. You need to escape the island, but to do that, you’ll have to overcome all the puzzles and find all the secrets to get out. Your grappling hookshot is your main way of transporting yourself around the island. You can attach yourself to wood and other objects. You can even jump from object to object a la Spiderman, but you’ll have to recharge it and land eventually.

The goal of The Free Ones is to escape from the island you’re on. You need to solve puzzles and jump platforms to escape. The creators of this game also helped make FarSky. You may know them as Farsky interactive. They also made Sky Break. The game is pretty much recently announced so there’s not much information about it online. You can expect an awesome physics-based platformer as info starts to surface about The Free Ones.
