Super Mario Flashback is an awesome fan-made Mario game that takes the classic Mario and combines with some newly redone pixel art.
It’s still a 2D game, so it clearly draws its inspiration from the sidescrolling format rather than 3D like Mario 64 (which was a masterpiece of a game). The new graphics feature new animations with vivid colors and a visually-pleasing palette. You can see wind effects, blocks, butterflies, and even how the enemies move are all redone with quirky animations. There’s a ton of attention to the finer details. You have to look to appreciate it. Mario himself has actual expressions and a ton of different animations.
The game mixes old-school gameplay with modern Mario graphics. This way, you get to play the classic levels with updated graphics. Although the graphics haven’t ever been an issue, if you like eye-candy, you should definitely give Super Mario Flashback a try.
The game has recently gotten a major overhaul, so you can play it to see for yourself. It currently features just one level- the original 1-1 of Super Mario Bros (which is probably one of the most iconic levels ever).
You can also perform some abilities like wall jumps which weren’t introduced until later games in series, but you still have the control of the older games. It also has the HP bar from Mario Galaxy, where it takes you three hits before you’re killed. This makes the game a lot easier, and I’d honestly prefer the two hit style (with a ‘shroom) in the older games.
It also has a very catchy soundtrack.
Super Mario Flashback is an awesome fan-game. Even with just one level available so far, it’s definitely worth a try no matter if you’re a Mario fan or not. You have to play it. The graphics and artwork alone are worth it.
Try out this fan take on the classic legenedary game.
