A Dragon Named Coal (Early Access) – Castlevania-Style Platformer Where Your Decisions Change the Game

Game Description

A Dragon Named Coal is a sidescrolling action platformer based in a dark fairytale world.

It plays similar to the Castlevania games (Symphony of the Night- the good ones) and has a lot of platforming with tight jumps, various enemies, and the classic retro pixelated feel that you’re nostalgic for.

You need to clear the level by making it to the end. It has a dark storyline that takes place in a fantasy world. The levels are well done with many hidden secrets and filled with branching paths. The game throws hidden goodies at you and reward you for exploring every nook and cranny tucked away.

There’s also a decision element to the game that alters the outcome of your character. Depending on the choices you make, it changes how your hero or villain develops. Combine that with alternate paths for each hand-crafted world and you have a game with replayability. This is something that’s lacking in a lot of platforming games nowadays. I mean, how many actually let you choose how your character develops based on decisions? Not many.

You not only change the outcome of your character, but you can also get upgrades for your skills and abilities. This offers another layer of customisation to the game. So you have a Castlevania-style platformer with branching paths, hidden items, decision trees, and even upgrades. This is already more than a lot of what other indie games offer from multiple games combined.

And to top it off, there’s a companion system with characters that match your playstle. How awesome is that?

A Dragon Named Coal features awesome pixelated graphics that spawn feelings of suspense and dread. And does it well. It matches the dark fairytale the game tells. It’s a rarity.

This is a real gem among today’s games. It’s definitely worth a play through.
