Mazes of Ogglar (Early Access) – Find Your Way through Trippy Alien Mazes in This Retro 90s FPS Exploration Game

Game Review

At first glance, Mazes of Ogglar looks like something from a 90s Windows screensaver.

But then when you start playing it, you’ll actually be pretty immersed into the abstract world it has to offer.

Mazes of Ogglar is a puzzler FPS game based on the classic games of the 90s like Corridor 7 and DOOM. It’s basically you armed with a variety of weapons running around a labyrinth maze system and all you need to do is blast the baddies and find the exit. It’s simple, but super addicting (especially for those who grew up with these games). It’ll bring back those nostalgic memories where you had to deal with 8-bit graphics and use your imagination to figure out if that’s an eyeball or a security camera spying on you.

You play as a brave warrior named Ikkarius on a melting star called Zaxxyn. You’re supposed to navigate the maze and beat all the trials in order to be judged fairly with the highest honor possible from your tribe- the Ethok.

That’s pretty much the storyline in a nutshell. It’s less about the story anyway and more about the blasty-blasty.

The mazes in this game are crazy. They’re psychedelic with multiple colors, textures, and paths. There are traps, artifacts, mirrors, lasers, and even sentinels scattered throughout each level. There are a ton of scenic things to look at, even though they don’t do much other than immersing you into the game. You’ll have to also memorize each level carefully as it’s easy to get lost in the mazes.

The combat is also reminiscent of a 90s shooter. You’ll have to aim carefully as it’s easy to overshoot your aim when you turn around to take down a monster behind you. The game plays similar to old-school classics and the control scheme is a bit clunky. But that only makes the game better!

Without spoiling the plot, you’ll probably have a good time playing Mazes of Ogglar. There’s a ton of stuff to explore with crazy lights, textures, and patterns. This game is like 90s DOOM in the future if it never got a graphics upgrade. You’ll have more entertainment just exploring all the crazy things you’ll see than the story. And you’ll have extra fun blasting baddies with your equips.

Mazes of Ogglar has an HP meter and that’s it. That’s the only resource you really need to be careful of. Otherwise, it’s an exploration game with minimal FPS elements. You’ll feel like you’re trapped in the maze screensaver on older Windows machines. The game is still in early access and worth a play through- if just for the trippy environments! And watch out for the traps!
