Underhero is an awesome little sidescroller adventure with an interesting combat system.
It features combat based on timing, meaning that you can’t simply hack and slash your way through the level. You’ll have to time each attack for it to be effective. Although this isn’t anything new and has been done before, it’s not often you see it implemented in a sidescroller.
The game features a full storyline with personable characters. It’s a very humorous tale with plenty of dialogue to keep you interested. In brief, it’s about a hero who got usurped by a villain. The villain takes his place as the hero. You play as the Masked Kid on an adventure to restore a special power that Elizabeth the IV used to possess to take down this villain (Mr. Stitches).
It’s quirky, funny, and cute.
Underhero is an RPG at its core. The combat is turn-based akin to Paper Mario (the classic ones- not the modern ones). You have to time your attacks just like how you need to press “A” in Paper Mario to do extra damage and get that “NICE” text to show up. Paper Mario fans will truly appreciate this game, as it’s clearly inspired by it.
You can also chain your attacks into a combo if you time it to the music (which is pretty catchy).
The world is full of characters to interact with. You can talk to NPCs, townsfolk, and even your enemies. The game really does have a level of immersion that’ll make you want to play it all in one sitting. There’s enough to keep you entertained- puzzling, minigames, humor, platformer, RPG satire, and a central HUB with a ton of characters to interact with.
There’s even a level system where you can choose what you want to upgrade. It’s just like Paper Mario’s upgrade system, offering you a choice of skills to level up.
The artwork is gorgeous. It features a retro-modern look with very appealing colors. It also has an original soundtrack with memorable tunes. It’s one adventure to behold.
