Dungeon Chop Chop is a roguelike dungeon crawler with multiplayer inspired by legendary games like Zelda!
It’s a roguelike adventure where you play as a brave knight on a quest for glory/fame/cash/loot/heroism! You wield a giant sword (for chop chopping) and a shield. The game plays like just like the old-school classics like Zelda, Golden Axe, and Secret of Mana. It features a top-down perspective with a slight tilt as you move your knight around in the 3D world.
You start out in a small village and you can interact with the few NPCs there. They each have different phrases they speak out in dialog boxes similar to newer Mario games. You can shop for many different items using gold, such as potions, boots, new equipment, and even a dungeon key. You earn gold from killing enemies and loot, which you’ll have to use in order to progress through the game.
The game currently has just a few dungeons that border the small village you start in. Some of them have an objective such as hitting all the levers within a time limit whereas others allow you to freely explore the dungeon. But this is where the fun part is- you get to chop!
Your giant sword allows you to chop nearly everything in the game. Buildings, stone, trees, enemies, and even random critters can all be chopped with a satisfying animation! IT’s all about chopping up everything you see. When you chop an enemy, you’ll see a small damage counter to show how much damage you’re dishing out!
The UI looks similar to a hybrid of Zelda and Secret of Manag. You have a few heart containers in the top-left corner and a minimap in the bottom-right. You also see your key count and gold count at the top.
The game is a rogue-like and it’s pretty difficult if you don’t chop carefully. You have to start over as a new knight every time you get killed, but you get to keep some items you’ve collected by spinning a giant wheel and then starting over.
Dungeon Chop Chop features a variety of enemies as well- from small bird things to a giant head of a snowman that fills up your entire screen.
The artwork is stunning. The game looks highly polished and the world is filled with talkative NPCs, random critters, and fully-animated enemies. You’ll traverse across everglade forests, frozen (and slippery) lands, and even a scorching hot desert during a sandstorm. All of the environments and visuals look like an AAA title with a cartoonish and comical feel.
The best part about this game is the multiplayer. If you want to play some local couch co-op with a buddy, the game easily supports 2 player mode. You two can navigate and traverse the world together and chop stuff up. It does make the game a little too easy though as it doesn’t scale in difficulty for more players. It supports both keyboard/mouse and Xbox Controllers!
If you’re looking for an awesome roguelike adventure game, you’ll definitely want to try out Dungeon Chop Chop. It’s free to play in the current early access version and offers everything you’d expect from a dungeon crawler- puzzles, shops, quests, enemies, bosses, action, multiplayer, and of course- chopping.
